RIP Roger Payne

The world has lost a giant among conservationists.

American biologist and environmentalist, Roger Payne, has died.  Famous for his 1967 discovery of whale song among humpback whales, Payne later became an important figure in the worldwide campaign to end commercial whaling.

He did not bombard the public with statistics. He appealed to people’s emotions by sharing the sounds of the majestic mammals so cruelly being massacred. Roger Payne’s efforts were catalytic in ending centuries of whaling. Just more proof that people respond to stories that move them.
